Fratta – Bagno di Romagna
More than a route, a journey. After the first two difficult ascents, we go inland towards the peaks of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, along a valley crossed by the most important river in Romagna, the Savio. From Mercato Saraceno to Bagno di Romagna, close to the Tuscan border, a long but regular ascent will engage the legs but will keep the mind relaxed: the old valley road that welcomes our wheels is quiet and sinuous. Upon arrival at Bagno di Romagna we will be amazed by the vestiges of historic buildings and sacred places (here crosses many paths and pilgrimages of devotion) and by a generous nature that expresses all its beauty in the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi, of which Bagno di Romagna is a reception center.
After a respectable prelude to the climbs of Pieve di Rivoschio and Ciola, the road to the upper Savio valley rises gently, amusing even the less performing cyclists who are more dedicated to tourism. But the overall altimetry will not be underestimated, softened by the passage in the small and delightful towns of the valley (Sarsina, Mercato Saraceno) that will suggest stops and refreshments. An itinerary recommended also in autumn to enjoy the splendid foliage that cloaks the valleys and ridges of the Apennines.
